Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) is a central scheme to protect girls and support their education. It was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 22 January 2015 at Panipat in Haryana. Here is what the scheme does.
Why it was launched
The Census of 2011 showed a fall in the Child Sex Ratio, the number of girls for every 1,000 boys aged 0 to 6, to 918. This raised concern about sex selection and discrimination against girls. BBBP was launched to address this.

Aims
- Prevent gender biased sex selection
- Ensure survival and protection of the girl child
- Ensure education and participation of girls
- Improve the Sex Ratio at Birth
How it works
BBBP is mainly an awareness and community action scheme. It works through:
- Campaigns in districts on valuing the girl child
- Strict action under the PCPNDT Act, 1994, which bans sex determination
- Support to increase girls’ enrolment and reduce dropouts
- Activities with schools, panchayats and local leaders
- Celebrating the birth of girls and recognising achievements
The scheme is run by the Ministry of Women and Child Development with the Ministries of Health and Education. Since 2021-22, BBBP has been part of the Sambal component of Mission Shakti, which covers women’s safety and empowerment.

No cash benefit
BBBP does not give money directly to any individual or family. There is no application form for cash under BBBP. The government has repeatedly warned people about fake forms and websites that promise money under this scheme. Do not pay anyone for such forms.
Families who want to save for a girl’s future can look at the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, a separate small savings scheme for girls.
Results
According to the government, the Sex Ratio at Birth at the national level has improved since the scheme began, and girls’ enrolment in secondary education has increased.
How you can help
- Report sex determination to the district authorities or the PCPNDT helpline.
- Encourage girls to complete school and higher education.
- Join local campaigns and support girls’ sports and skills.
Bottom line
Beti Bachao Beti Padhao is an awareness and action scheme, not a cash scheme. Its goal is to make sure every girl is born, protected and educated.
