Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) is the Centre’s flagship scheme to provide safe drinking water through a tap connection to every rural household. Here is how it works.
Launch and goals
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the mission on 15 August 2019. Its aim is to give every rural home a Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC), which provides:
- Water of prescribed quality, as per BIS standard IS 10500
- At least 55 litres per person per day
- On a regular and long term basis
The slogan for this aim is Har Ghar Jal.

Progress and extension
When the mission began, only about 3.2 crore rural households, around 17 percent, had tap water connections. According to government data, this rose to over 15 crore households by 2025. In the Union Budget 2025-26, the government announced that the mission would be extended until 2028, with a focus on quality of infrastructure and operation and maintenance through community participation.
Funding
The mission is run by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, together with states. Funds are generally shared 50:50 between the Centre and states, 90:10 for Himalayan and northeastern states, and fully by the Centre for Union Territories.

Role of the village
JJM is designed to be community led. Each village forms a Village Water and Sanitation Committee, or Pani Samiti, under the gram panchayat, with at least half women members. The committee plans, implements and maintains the village water supply. Villages are certified as Har Ghar Jal when every household and public institution has a tap connection.
Women in villages are trained to test water quality using Field Test Kits, and samples are also tested in NABL accredited laboratories.
How to check your village
- Visit the Jal Jeevan Mission website.
- Open the dashboard or reports section.
- Select your state, district, block, panchayat and village to see the status of tap connections.
If you do not have a connection
