An apprenticeship is paid training on the job at a company or establishment, which helps young people gain real work skills. The National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship encourages companies to take apprentices. Here is how it works.
About NAPS
NAPS was launched in August 2016 under the Apprentices Act, 1961. Its second phase, called NAPS-2, began in 2023. Under the scheme, the government shares part of the stipend paid to apprentices, which is now transferred directly to the apprentice’s bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). This makes it cheaper for companies to train young people.
