The Meenakshi Amman temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi, a form of Parvati, and her consort Sundareswarar, a form of Lord Shiva. With its colourful towering gateways, it is one of the most famous temples in South India.

The legend
According to belief, Meenakshi was born to the Pandya king Malayadhwaja and his queen as a princess with three breasts. She was told that the third would disappear when she met her destined husband. When she met Lord Shiva on Mount Kailash, this happened, and she knew he was the one. Shiva came to Madurai as Sundareswarar, and their divine wedding was performed with Lord Vishnu giving away the bride.

History
The temple is believed to be very ancient and is linked with the Sangam era city of Madurai. Much of the present structure was built and expanded under the Nayak rulers in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, especially during the time of Thirumalai Nayak.
Architecture
- The complex has 14 gopurams, or gateway towers, covered with thousands of colourful sculptures of gods, goddesses and mythical figures. The tallest, the southern gopuram, rises about 52 metres.
- The Hall of a Thousand Pillars, Aayiram Kaal Mandapam, has finely carved pillars and houses a temple art museum.
- The Potramarai Kulam, or Golden Lotus Tank, is a sacred tank inside the complex.
- Musical pillars produce different notes when tapped.
