Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati temple in Prabhadevi, Mumbai, is one of the most visited Ganesh temples in India. Film stars, politicians and ordinary devotees queue here, especially on Tuesdays.
This article is based on religious beliefs and traditions. Democratic Bharat Live does not claim to verify them.
History
The temple was built in 1801. Records say it was constructed by Laxman Vithu Patil with funds from Deubai Patil, a woman from the Agri community who had no children and wished that Lord Ganesh would bless other childless women. The original small temple has since been rebuilt into a multi storey structure with a gold plated inner dome.

The idol
The idol of Lord Ganesh is carved from a single black stone and is about 2.5 feet tall. Its trunk turns to the right, and such idols are called Siddhivinayak and are believed to be especially powerful and to grant wishes quickly. The idol has four hands holding a lotus, an axe, a rosary and a bowl of modaks. Riddhi and Siddhi are on either side.
Darshan
- The temple is generally open from early morning to late night, with aarti at set times. Check the official trust website for current timings.
- Tuesdays and Angarki Sankashti Chaturthi draw very large crowds, with long queues starting the night before.
- The trust has offered online booking for some darshan and puja services. Use only the official website.
- Mobile phones and large bags may be restricted; follow security checks.
