The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana was approved by the Union Cabinet in February 2024. It aims to help one crore households install rooftop solar systems and get up to 300 units of free electricity every month. The scheme is run by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
Subsidy amounts
The central financial assistance (CFA) for residential rooftop solar is:
- Rs 30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW.
- Rs 18,000 per kW for additional capacity up to 3 kW.
- Total subsidy capped at Rs 78,000 for systems of 3 kW or more.
So a 1 kW system gets Rs 30,000, a 2 kW system Rs 60,000, and a 3 kW system Rs 78,000. Group housing societies and resident welfare associations get support for common facilities, as per scheme rules.

How much capacity you need
As a rough guide given on the portal:
- Monthly use of 0 to 150 units: 1 to 2 kW
- 150 to 300 units: 2 to 3 kW
- Above 300 units: above 3 kW

How to apply
- Register on pmsuryaghar.gov.in with your state, electricity distribution company, consumer number, mobile number and email.
- Log in and apply for rooftop solar.
- Get a feasibility approval from the discom.
- Choose a registered vendor and get the system installed.
- Submit installation details and apply for net metering.
- After the net meter is installed and the discom inspects, a commissioning certificate is issued.
- Submit your bank details and a cancelled cheque. The subsidy is credited to your bank account.
Loans
Collateral free loans for rooftop solar systems up to 3 kW are available from public sector banks at concessional rates, as per the scheme. Check with your bank for current rates.
Net metering
Under net metering, extra electricity produced by your panels is sent to the grid, and you are billed only for net consumption. This is how the “free electricity” benefit is achieved.
Tips
- Use only vendors registered on the portal.
- Check panel quality, warranty and after sales service.
- Make sure the roof gets good sunlight and is strong enough.
Bottom line
PM Surya Ghar can cut power bills sharply. Apply on the official portal, choose a registered vendor and complete net metering to get the subsidy.
