Indian Railways is introducing a significant convenience for those who frequently send or receive parcels through the rail network. The new service eliminates the need for customers to visit railway station parcel offices, as the railway will now facilitate doorstep pickup and delivery. This initiative, titled Ghar Se Ghar Tak, will initially be launched across eight major cities.

Expanding Service to Major Urban Centers
The new parcel service is designed to support individual customers, small business owners, and online sellers by streamlining logistics. The service will be available in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Pune. By integrating doorstep logistics, the railway aims to make the process of transporting goods more efficient and accessible for everyone. This initiative follows a successful pilot run, and the railway is now transitioning it into a regular service. South Central Railway shared information regarding this service on social media on May 6, 2026. The core objective of this initiative is to simplify the parcel transportation process, ensuring that users no longer need to travel to railway station parcel offices to deposit or collect their shipments.
Operational Model and Logistics Integration
Under this initiative, Indian Railways will collaborate with logistics partners to ensure seamless service. While the railway remains responsible for the inter-city transportation of parcels, the logistics partners will manage the collection of items from the customer’s home and their final delivery to the specified address. Logistics partners are required to collect the parcel from the customer and deliver it to railway staff at least one hour before the train’s scheduled departure. Customers can book these services through the official Rail Parcel App or the railway website. This partnership model is intended not only to facilitate parcel movement but also to foster connectivity and support business growth for various users. The integration of technology allows for a digital ecosystem where the movement of goods is tracked and managed efficiently.
Booking, Tracking, and Digital Security
Bookings can be made up to 15 days in advance, with the facility remaining open until one day before the train’s scheduled departure. Upon booking, users receive a 10-digit Progressive Reference Record number, which allows for live tracking of the parcel. The digital platform also provides users with GST invoices and real-time status updates. Payments can be processed via UPI, credit cards, debit cards, or net banking. To ensure security, the final delivery will be verified through a one-time password system, ensuring the parcel reaches the intended recipient safely. This digital infrastructure is designed to provide transparency and peace of mind for the sender and the receiver alike.
Cancellation, Refund Policy, and Future Outlook
The railway has established clear guidelines for cancellations. If a customer cancels the booking before the parcel is picked up, the railway will refund the freight charges after deducting a 10 rupee clerkage fee. However, refunds for the pickup and delivery portion of the service will be governed by the specific policies of the logistics partner involved, rather than railway regulations. This initiative represents a modern approach to railway logistics, focusing on user convenience and digital integration. While the service is currently limited to the aforementioned eight major cities, it marks a significant shift in how Indian Railways manages parcel logistics. The exact launch date for the regular service remains to be specified, but the infrastructure for booking, tracking, and secure delivery is already being prepared to enhance the overall user experience for both personal and commercial parcel senders. By removing the physical requirement of station visits, the railway is adapting to the needs of a modern, digital-first economy, aiming to provide a seamless transition from the doorstep of the sender to the doorstep of the receiver.
