A high-stakes political confrontation unfolded at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan as the INDIA bloc organized a massive rally to protest against alleged electoral irregularities. Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, launched a scathing attack on the central government and the Election Commission, accusing them of manipulating the democratic process. In a swift rebuttal: the Bharatiya Janata Party dismissed the entire event as a failure, claiming that the opposition failed to mobilize the numbers they had promised. The rally has become a focal point for the ongoing debate over the integrity of the electoral system in the country.

Opposition targets Election Commission and Government
Addressing the gathering at Ramlila Maidan, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi made serious allegations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He asserted that Kumar would be removed from his post and face imprisonment for treason in the future due to his alleged involvement in vote theft. Gandhi also warned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, stating that they would not be able to escape legal action. He claimed that the voice of the people, including youth, farmers, and laborers, is clear: they will not allow the Constitution and democracy to be destroyed. Rahul Gandhi further alleged that there was rigging in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and subsequent assembly polls. He emphasized that his struggle is not just a political one but a mission to protect the soul of India.
BJP labels the rally a flop and questions attendance
The Bharatiya Janata Party was quick to respond to the opposition’s claims. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra held a press conference where he presented photos and videos to suggest that the rally was a waste of time. Patra pointed out that while the opposition claimed 10 lakh people would attend, about 40 percent of the Ramlila Maidan remained empty. He detailed that out of the 28,000 chairs set up at the venue, approximately 5,000 to 7,000 were vacant during the peak hours of the event. Patra also addressed Rahul Gandhi’s claim that the 2024 elections were illegal. He clarified that Gyanesh Kumar was not even the Election Commissioner during the 2024 polls, as he assumed office only in 2025. The BJP leader challenged the opposition to provide evidence of their claims in court rather than making speeches at a rally.
Kharge calls for removal of Prime Minister
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge delivered a forceful speech, alleging that several BJP-led governments were formed on a stolen mandate. He specifically mentioned the governments in Maharashtra, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh as examples of what he termed chori governments. Kharge argued that removing Prime Minister Narendra Modi from power is essential for the survival of democracy. He accused the Prime Minister and the Home Minister of using the Election Commission to disenfranchise Dalits, youth, and women. Kharge vowed that the opposition would continue to fight until the current Chief Election Commissioner is removed from office. He stated that the leaders of the INDIA bloc have gathered to ensure that the voice of the common citizen is not suppressed by the ruling party.
Regional leaders voice concerns over electoral rolls
The rally saw participation from various regional leaders who echoed the concerns of the Congress party. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav took a swipe at Home Minister Amit Shah’s previous comparison of the BJP’s position to the unshakeable foot of Angad. Yadav remarked that if there is no ground left for the BJP, there is no place for them to plant their foot. He alleged that the names of 1.27 lakh Hindu voters were removed from the electoral rolls in Uttar Pradesh to influence election outcomes. Meanwhile: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee expressed her solidarity with the opposition and criticized the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. She described SIR as a tool used by the BJP to target opposition-ruled states and manipulate elections. Banerjee used a nursery rhyme parody to allege that the BJP was behind the theft of votes and democracy.
BJP’s personal critique of Rahul Gandhi
During his press briefing, Sambit Patra also took personal shots at Rahul Gandhi’s conduct. He referred to Gandhi’s appeal to the rally attendees to do some shopping, questioning whether the Congress leader himself would shop in local markets like Chandni Chowk. Patra claimed that Gandhi’s passport is filled with stamps from Vietnam and Thailand, suggesting that the leader would likely leave for a foreign trip shortly after the rally. The BJP also accused the Congress of using trick photography to make the crowd appear larger than it actually was. Home Minister Amit Shah added to the criticism, stating that if Rahul Gandhi wants to be Prime Minister, he should remain in a mock parliament as he would never succeed in the real one. The BJP maintained that the opposition is spreading chaos out of frustration over their repeated electoral defeats.
