The proposed INDIA bloc rally scheduled for November 1 at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan has met with significant opposition from the local trading community. Business associations across the national capital have expressed concerns regarding the timing of the political event, which coincides with the peak festive season. Traders have formally appealed to the organizers to defer the gathering until after the Diwali celebrations to avoid disrupting commercial activities.
Potential Economic Losses and Market Impact
According to projections shared by trade bodies, the rally on November 1 could bring commercial operations across Old Delhi to a standstill. It is estimated that approximately 21 major markets in the region could be affected by the event. Traders have warned that such a disruption during the height of the festive shopping period could result in financial losses amounting to nearly 10,000 crore rupees. Led by Paramjit Singh Pamma, president of the Sadar Bazar Bari Market Traders Association, protesters held placards urging political leaders to reconsider the schedule.

Police Permission and Regulatory Conditions
While the Delhi Police has granted permission for the INDIA bloc to hold the rally at Ramlila Maidan, the approval comes with a set of strict conditions. The authorities emphasized that Ramlila Maidan remains one of the three designated protest sites in the city. However, the police denied a separate request for a mock impeachment event that was proposed for October 30 and November 1. The administration is focused on maintaining order and ensuring that the rally does not lead to complete logistical chaos in the surrounding areas.
Objections from Various Groups
The opposition to the rally is not limited to market associations. The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has also called upon the opposition parties to desist from activities that could negatively impact Hindu festivals and the local economy. Traders from Kashmere Gate also joined the protest, highlighting that the influx of rally participants could deter shoppers and create immense pressure on the city’s infrastructure during a critical business period. The business community maintains that their livelihoods should not be compromised for political demonstrations during the holidays.
