Online fraud cases have grown with digital payments. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), through the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), runs a national helpline and reporting portal. Acting fast after a cyber fraud can help stop the money from being withdrawn.
What to do immediately
- Call the national cyber crime helpline 1930 as soon as possible. Quick reporting, often called the golden hour, improves the chance of freezing the money in the fraudster’s account.
- File a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in, the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
- Inform your bank and block your card or UPI if needed.
- Keep screenshots, transaction IDs, phone numbers and messages as evidence.

Common scams
- Fake digital arrest: callers pose as police, CBI or customs officials on video calls and claim you are under “digital arrest”. The government has clearly said there is no such thing as digital arrest under Indian law. Real agencies do not demand money on video calls.
- KYC update scams: messages saying your bank account or SIM will be blocked unless you click a link.
- Job and task scams: offers to earn money by liking videos or rating hotels, which later ask for deposits.
- Investment scams: fake trading apps and WhatsApp groups promising very high returns.
- Courier and parcel scams: claims that a parcel in your name contains illegal items.
- Refund and customer care scams: fake helpline numbers found online.
How to stay safe
- Never share OTPs, UPI PINs, card CVVs or passwords with anyone.
- You never need to enter your UPI PIN to receive money.
- Do not install screen sharing or remote access apps on a stranger’s request.
- Verify customer care numbers only from official websites or apps.
- Use two factor authentication for email and social media.

Report fraud calls and messages
The Department of Telecommunications’ Sanchar Saathi portal has a Chakshu feature to report suspected fraud calls and messages. You can also check how many mobile connections are registered in your name and block lost phones.
Bottom line
If you face cyber fraud, call 1930 at once and report on cybercrime.gov.in. Remember that government agencies never arrest people on video calls or ask for money online.
