The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin (PMAY-G) was launched in November 2016 by restructuring the earlier Indira Awaas Yojana. It is run by the Ministry of Rural Development and aims to provide a pucca house with basic amenities to rural families who are homeless or living in kutcha or dilapidated houses.
Financial assistance
- Rs 1.20 lakh per house in plain areas.
- Rs 1.30 lakh per house in hilly states, northeastern states, difficult areas and some notified districts.
- The cost is shared between the Centre and states.
- Beneficiaries can also get 90 to 95 days of unskilled wages under MGNREGA for building their house.
- Toilet support of Rs 12,000 is available through the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) or other schemes.
The money is paid in instalments directly to the beneficiary’s bank account, linked to progress in construction, verified through geo tagged photos.

Minimum house size
The house must have a minimum area of 25 square metres, including a dedicated area for hygienic cooking.
Who is eligible
Beneficiaries were first identified from the Socio Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011 data, after verification by gram sabhas. Later, the Awaas+ survey added more eligible families. In 2024, the Union Cabinet approved the scheme’s continuation to build 2 crore more houses in the next phase, and a fresh Awaas+ survey was launched with a mobile app that allows self survey with face authentication.
Generally excluded are households with a pucca house, those owning certain vehicles or mechanised farm equipment, those with a government employee, income tax payers and others listed in the exclusion criteria.
