The National Film Awards are the most prestigious film awards given by the Government of India. They were first presented in 1954 and are now organised by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, with the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) handling the process after the merger of the Directorate of Film Festivals with it. The awards are presented by the President of India.
The three sections
The awards are given in three main sections:
- Feature Films, which covers the best feature film, direction, acting, music, cinematography and many technical categories, along with awards for the best film in each recognised Indian language.
- Non Feature Films, which covers documentaries, short films and similar works.
- Best Writing on Cinema, which honours books and film criticism.

How winners are selected
Producers submit their films for the year under consideration, following the rules notified for that edition. Independent juries made up of filmmakers, critics and experts watch the entries. For feature films, regional panels first shortlist films, and a central jury then makes the final choice. The jury reports its decisions to the ministry, and the results are announced publicly, usually through a press conference and the Press Information Bureau.
What winners receive
Top awards carry the Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus), while others carry the Rajat Kamal (Silver Lotus), along with a certificate and a cash prize. The ministry revised the award structure and cash amounts in recent years, merging and renaming some categories. Check the latest regulations on the ministry’s website for current prize amounts.

Dadasaheb Phalke Award
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India’s highest honour in cinema. It is given for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema over a lifetime. It is named after Dadasaheb Phalke, who made Raja Harishchandra (1913), considered India’s first full length feature film. The first recipient was actress Devika Rani in 1969.
Why the awards matter
Unlike popular awards shows, the National Film Awards give equal space to films in many Indian languages and to non feature works. Many small budget regional films have gained national attention after winning.
Year and timing
Awards are given for films certified in a particular calendar year, and the ceremony is usually held the following year or later. The timing has varied over the years, so the official announcement from the ministry is the best guide.
Bottom line
The National Film Awards honour quality cinema from every corner of India. Juries, not box office numbers, decide the winners, which is why they remain a respected marker of excellence.
