Prime Minister Narendra Modi has raised significant questions regarding the performance of the Congress party in the recently concluded Member of Legislative Council (MLC) elections. These elections were conducted for 28 seats across four major states: Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, and Karnataka. In a post on the social media platform X, the Prime Minister highlighted the dismal performance of the opposition party despite the use of traditional voting methods.
Zero Seats for Congress Despite Ballot Papers
The MLC elections in the four states were held using ballot papers instead of electronic voting machines. Prime Minister Narendra Modi pointed out that even with the use of ballot boxes, the Congress party failed to secure a single seat out of the 28 contested positions. He asked the public to guess the number of seats won by the party, only to reveal that the count was zero. This statement is seen as a direct response to the ongoing political debates regarding voting transparency and the effectiveness of opposition strategies in regional elections. The results have sparked a fresh wave of political commentary on the current standing of the Congress party at the state level.

Internal Friction Within Political Alliances
While the Prime Minister focused on the Congress party, other regional leaders have highlighted internal issues within the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav launched a sharp attack on the BJP following the election results. He claimed that the defeat has led to significant tension between the party’s leadership in Delhi and Lucknow. According to Yadav, the situation has escalated to a point where leaders in Lucknow are reportedly not answering phone calls from the central leadership in Delhi. He described this as a violation of political decorum and advised the party to resolve its internal bitterness.
Disputes in Maharashtra Mahayuti
The impact of the MLC election results is also being felt in Maharashtra, where the Mahayuti alliance is facing internal conflict. A blame game has commenced between the BJP and the Shiv Sena regarding the election outcomes. The BJP has accused the Shiv Sena of being greedy, while the Shiv Sena has countered by blaming the BJP for an unfair distribution of seats. These developments indicate a growing rift within the alliance as both parties navigate the aftermath of the polls. The results have not only highlighted the challenges for the Congress but have also exposed vulnerabilities within the governing coalitions in key states.
