The Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) is managed by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) under the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Both you and your employer contribute to your EPF account every month. Here are the official ways for an EPF balance check.
First, activate your UAN
The Universal Account Number (UAN) is a 12 digit number given to every EPF member. Your employer usually shares it. Activate it on the EPFO Member e-Sewa portal using your UAN, Aadhaar and mobile number. Most balance check services need an activated UAN linked with Aadhaar and your bank account (KYC).

Method 1: UMANG app
- Download the UMANG app from the official app store.
- Register with your mobile number.
- Search for EPFO and choose View Passbook.
- Enter your UAN and the OTP.
You can see your balance and contributions for each employer.
Method 2: Missed call
Give a missed call to 9966044425 from the mobile number registered with your UAN. You will get an SMS with your last contribution and balance. This needs your UAN to be linked with Aadhaar, bank account or PAN. The service is free.

Method 3: SMS
Send an SMS in the format EPFOHO UAN ENG to 7738299899 from your registered mobile number. Replace ENG with the first three letters of your preferred language, such as HIN for Hindi. You will receive your balance details by SMS.
Method 4: EPFO passbook portal
- Visit passbook.epfindia.gov.in.
- Log in with your UAN, password and captcha.
- Select the member ID linked to your current or past employer.
- View or download your passbook.
The passbook shows monthly employee and employer shares, pension contribution and interest credited.
Why the balance may look low
- Interest for a financial year is credited after the rate is notified, so there may be a delay.
- Contributions from an old employer may sit in a separate member ID. Use the One Member One EPF Account transfer facility to merge them.
- Part of the employer’s share goes to the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS), which is not shown as EPF balance.
Safety tips
EPFO never asks for your UAN password, OTP or bank details on phone calls. Report such calls and use only official websites and apps.
Bottom line
An EPF balance check takes less than a minute through a missed call or SMS. For full details, use the UMANG app or the EPFO passbook portal.
