Aadhaar is issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). If you have moved to a new home, you should update the address on your Aadhaar, since it is used for bank KYC, ration, subsidies and many other services. UIDAI allows Aadhaar address update online through the myAadhaar portal.
What you need
- An Aadhaar number with a mobile number linked to it, because login is through OTP.
- A valid proof of address in your name, such as a passport, bank passbook or statement, electricity, water or gas bill (recent), rent agreement, or a certificate from a government body, as listed by UIDAI.
The list of accepted documents is published on the UIDAI website and should be checked before you apply.

Steps for Aadhaar address update online
- Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.
- Log in with your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile.
- Click Document Update or Address Update, as shown on the portal.
- Enter the new address exactly as it appears on your proof document.
- Upload a clear scan of the document.
- Pay the fee if applicable and submit.
- Note the Update Request Number (URN).
Fees
UIDAI has at times allowed free online document updates for a limited period and has extended this window several times. Outside such periods, a fee applies. Check the current fee and any free update deadline on the UIDAI website, because these change.

If you have no address proof in your name
UIDAI has a Head of Family (HoF) based address update option. A family member, such as a parent or spouse, whose address is already on Aadhaar can approve the change, using a document that shows the relationship, such as a ration card or marriage certificate.
Track the request
Use the URN to check the status on the myAadhaar portal. Once updated, download the new e-Aadhaar from the same site. It is as valid as the physical card.
Update at an Aadhaar centre
If your mobile is not linked, or you need biometric or mobile updates, visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or an authorised enrolment centre. You can book an appointment online.
Safety tips
- Never share your Aadhaar OTP with anyone.
- Use only the official UIDAI portal.
- Lock your biometrics on myAadhaar if you want extra security.
Helpline
UIDAI’s toll free helpline number is 1947.
Bottom line
Aadhaar address update online is quick if your mobile is linked and you have a proof document in your name. Keep the URN safe and download the updated e-Aadhaar once the change is approved.
