The javelin

  • Men use a javelin weighing 800 grams.

  • Juniors and youth categories use lighter implements.

The javelin has a metal tip, a shaft and a cord grip near the centre of gravity.

The runway and the arc

Athletes run along a runway and must throw before reaching a curved line called the arc at the end. Stepping on or over the arc or the side lines before the javelin lands makes the throw a foul. The athlete must also leave the runway from behind the arc after the throw.

How to hold and throw

The javelin must be held by the grip with one hand, and thrown over the shoulder or upper arm. Slinging or hurling it in other ways is not allowed. The athlete cannot turn their back fully towards the throwing area before releasing it.

When a throw is valid

  • The metal tip must strike the ground before any other part of the javelin.
  • It must land inside the marked sector lines, which form an angle of about 29 degrees.
  • The athlete must not foul at the arc.

The distance is measured from the inner edge of the arc to the first mark made by the tip.

Competition format

In major events, there is a qualifying round with an automatic qualification mark. In the final, each athlete gets three throws. The top eight then get three more throws. The best single valid throw decides the ranking. If two athletes tie, the second best throw is used.

Neeraj Chopra’s record

  • Gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with a throw of 87.58 m, India’s first Olympic gold in athletics.
  • Silver at the Paris 2024 Olympics with 89.45 m.
  • World Champion at Budapest in 2023.
  • He crossed the 90 metre mark for the first time in May 2025 at the Doha Diamond League.

He trains under the national programme supported by the Sports Authority of India and the Athletics Federation of India.

Why the 90 metre mark matters

Throws over 90 metres are considered world class in men’s javelin. Only a small group of throwers in history have crossed it.

Bottom line

In javelin, the tip must land first, inside the sector, without crossing the arc. Neeraj Chopra’s success has made these rules familiar to millions of Indian fans.
