Mumbai Indians have officially unveiled their coaching lineup for the upcoming IPL 2027 season. The franchise has brought back several former players alongside experienced support staff to work under head coach Kieron Pollard. This strategic reshuffle aims to strengthen the team’s tactical approach and player development processes.
New Appointments in the Coaching Staff
The Mumbai Indians franchise has announced a significant restructuring of its coaching group for the IPL 2027 season. This transition involves the appointment of several key figures who bring a blend of historical familiarity with the franchise and extensive international coaching experience. Robin Uthappa has been named the batting coach for the upcoming campaign. Uthappa, who was a member of the Indian squad that secured victory in the inaugural ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2007, previously played for the Mumbai Indians during the 2008 season. This appointment marks his first major coaching role within the Indian Premier League. His primary responsibilities will include refining the performance of the batting unit, enhancing tactical decision-making processes, and assisting players in adapting to the shifting requirements of modern T20 cricket.
Alongside Uthappa, the franchise has appointed Mitchell McClenaghan as the bowling coach. The former New Zealand left-arm pacer is a familiar face to the organization, having represented the team between 2015 and 2020. During his tenure as a player, he contributed to four IPL title-winning campaigns in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. Known for his competitive temperament and aggressive style of play, McClenaghan is expected to bring his deep knowledge of T20 bowling strategies to the squad as they prepare for the new season.
Focus on Fielding and Player Development
The franchise has also bolstered its support staff by bringing in T. Dilip as the fielding coach. Dilip joins the organization following a successful period with the Indian national men’s team. His tenure with the national side was marked by significant achievements, including being part of the coaching setup during India’s victories at the 2024 and 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cups, as well as the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Recognized for his expertise in fielding mechanics, Dilip is tasked with emphasizing athleticism, consistent preparation, and high standards in the field for the Mumbai Indians players.
Furthermore, Dhawal Kulkarni has been appointed as the development bowling coach. Kulkarni, a former pacer with extensive experience in Mumbai cricket, is a two-time IPL champion with the franchise, having been part of the title-winning squads in 2013 and 2020. His association with the team spanned two periods, from 2008 to 2013 and again from 2020 to 2021. In his new role, Kulkarni will focus on the long-term growth of the team’s bowling talent, with a specific emphasis on nurturing young Indian fast bowlers. His responsibilities are designed to extend beyond the duration of the IPL season, as he will be involved in a year-round performance program aimed at strengthening the overall talent pool and ensuring continuity in player development.
Leadership Continuity and Organizational Transition
Leading this new coaching group is head coach Kieron Pollard, who continues his long-standing relationship with the franchise. Pollard, who has been associated with the Mumbai Indians for 16 years, previously took over the head coaching role from Mahela Jayawardene. His leadership provides a sense of continuity as the franchise integrates new coaching philosophies. The management of the Mumbai Indians has confirmed that they have parted ways with Lasith Malinga, Paras Mhambrey, and Carl Hopkinson as part of this transition process. These changes reflect the franchise’s strategic vision to combine the deep-rooted knowledge of former players with the expertise of coaches who have succeeded at the highest levels of international cricket. By focusing on both immediate tactical needs and long-term talent development, the organization aims to build a sustainable framework for the 2027 season and beyond. The collective experience of the new coaching staff is expected to provide the stability and strategic depth required to navigate the competitive demands of the upcoming tournament.
